Like many of his H1 Unlimited hydroplane peers, Andrew Tate began racing in small, wooden kneel-down outboard hydroplanes at just nine years old. A fourth-generation boat racer, Andrew was born into one of the sport’s most respected families, his great-grandfather, grandfather, parents, and younger brother have all raced competitively. You could say Andrew was truly born to drive hydroplanes.
He launched his own racing career in the APBA Stock and Modified Outboard classes at age 11, quickly earning multiple National Championships and recognition for his skill and consistency. In 2010, Andrew transitioned to the Inboard category, where he continued his winning ways across both the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and the Hydroplane Racing League (HRL), accumulating nearly 100 race victories and nine National Championship titles. His exceptional success has earned him induction into the APBA Hall of Champions five times (2010, 2015, 2018, and twice in 2025).
Within the HRL, Andrew has captured back-to-back Grand Prix Season Championships (2022 and 2023), including consecutive wins in Valleyfield, Québec. He also earned two victories in the H350 class in 2022 and was named HRL Driver of the Year that same season.
Andrew made his H1 Unlimited debut in 2016, driving the U-9 Delta/Realtrac for Mike and Lori Jones. That rookie year, he stunned the field by winning the Seattle Seafair Cup and earning the title of H1 Unlimited Rookie of the Year. Since then, he has amassed 11 Unlimited race victories, including a prestigious APBA Gold Cup win in 2018, an achievement that makes Andrew and his father, Mark Tate, the only father-son duo in history to have both lifted the legendary trophy.
Now a two-time H1 Unlimited National Champion (2018 and 2024) and the reigning 2025 H1 Unlimited National High Points Champion, Andrew continues to build on his family’s racing legacy.
